Employee Protection Act - Danielle
- There is a new interim policy, Utah Protection of Public Employees Act, that is now being applied to higher ed employees.
- The act states that we cannot retaliate or take adverse action against anyone for bringing up a safety concern.
- It's not as simple as it sounds.
- For purposes of the policy, an employee is anyone who receives a paycheck from the U.
- Concerns that employees could bring up include waste or misuse of funds, violated law, mismanagement, unethical conduct, and/or safety concerns.
- An adverse action is something that affects employment. E.g. a warning, wages lost, or termination. Also included under this policy are compensation, terms, location (desk), rights, and privileges.
- The new policy also changes what happens once someone files a claim. They are now entitled to a hearing, which was previously only offered at termination.
- Faculty goes through a consolidated committee.
- Staff goes through a 3 person committee similar to termination, but within 30 days.
- If someone has a safety or misuse concern, we need to take it seriously and address it.
- It someone has made such a claim, we will need to consider how to proceed and take action.
- The person making the claim has to provide a scintilla of evidence; so while it is a low threshold, it does require backup.
Employee Exit Process - Danielle
- Once an employee termination has been entered into the University system, access to university systems is cut off.
- For CE systems (e.g. slack), we are responsible for revoking that access.
- Email is not shut off with termination - task force trying to shut down old emails and determine way to move forward
- Moving to a manager requires rationale
- Shutting email off is considered on a case to case basis and must prove that there is an impact to consider
- Any changes to mailboxes goes through HR
- Ubox is similar - can get access through HR and then UIT
- Danielle just received a promotion over payroll, retirement, and absence management; she will be replaced by Sarah Wilson.
- Sarah currently works in HR and will be a good fit.
- Danielle promises to fix the pay memo system and the Flash issue with Kronos.
Volunteer Committee Update - Nate
- Nate recently sent an email to all CE staff detailing the new volunteer policy.
- We're excited to give this opportunity to all employees.
- Currently, the volunteer committee does not have a chair, so Nate will be asking someone to take over.
- We need to recruit a few more members, so if you're interested or have someone who's interested, let Nate know.
Safety Statement - Nate
- At the U recently included an article on a safety statement that should be added to syllabi: https://attheu.utah.edu/home-page/adding-safety-to-the-syllabus/
- While we don't necessarily need to add the statement to all syllabi, it's something worth considering.
- The statement addresses sexual misconduct and safety concerns.
- The resource list included in the statement is good information to anyone to know.
- We will be adding that resource list to our website.
- This safety statement would apply to anything in 540, Sandy, and St. George.
Employee Appreciation Day - Ben
- Employee Appreciated Day is September 26th from 10a-2p this year.
- We have reserved two tables. ELI will staff one table with students and CE will staff the other.
- We'll be looking for volunteers to staff the table.
- RTU could be a good fir for promotion.
Sharing Time!
- The Marketing Lifelong Learning week email had an amazing response, which challenges marketing's opinion about the usefulness of a CE-wide email.
- Youth just wrapped up with summer and they are interested in purchasing the van if it gets retired.
- ELI is having the biggest fall intake that they've experience in many years.
