How to Navigate Canvas - Tips & Student Example

Professional Education has shared with us a student email they sent out with instructions on how to access a class in Canvas. Below, you will see the email contents and the attached powerpoint. General tips are included in the right column.

Email

Welcome to Professional Bookkeeper with QuickBooks Online Certificate!

We are so excited to have you be a part of the Professional Bookkeeper with QuickBooks Online Certificate! This email contacts important details regarding your program start-up. Please take a moment to review the attached Orientation slide show.

  1. CIS – If you are new to the CIS system, you will need to create your log-in.

  2. Canvas - You will need to access your Canvas account. I recommend checking Canvas regularly for course updates, discussions, and answers to common student questions.

  • *IMPORTANT: You will receive two emails from Instructure Canvas inviting you to the course (Professional Bookkeeper and Professional QuickBooks Online). You will need to accept both in order to access the course. Steps to do this are here.**

Detailed information and steps to each of these sign-ins are provided in the attached PowerPoint slideshow.

If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to reach out!

General Tips:

  • If students have to be added to Canvas manually, it’s best to enroll them with the sis id (their UNID in the format of u0123456). If they are enrolled with their email, that’s when they have connection problems. Students get kicked out often that way.

  • Stay consistent in manual enrollments. You shouldn’t enroll one with their email and the other with their UNID. It creates two accounts for them. They can contact helpdesk@utah.edu for it to be merged.

  • Semester based vs non-semester based

    • Non semester based is great for a course that may be running over into multiple semesters – it doesn’t automatically conclude everyone at the end of the semester.

  • Set the admin as the “designer” not a “teacher” in the role. Students reach out to the admin because they think they are the teacher. Forwarding it on just delays their response.
